As an art lover, it’s hard to find time to visit museums on a regular basis. With all the obligations you have on a weekly basis it’s hard to find enough time to pay your local museum a visit. So why not visit a museum at night? A great alternative for those like me who can’t find time by day to visit museums. That’s why I am taking you to a night out at the museum.
Somewhere in February, I finally found some time to visit the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. So I grabbed my camera, packed my backpack and put on my new GUESS Intrepid watch (to keep an eye on time) and headed for the renewed Stedelijk Museum.
This Amsterdam based museum basically is an international institute, dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design. The museum started hosting museum-nights on Thursdays, opening up to the public at night and introducing a fun new way to visit the museum.
I think this is a great way to open-up art to the public and really give people the chance to see a museum in a new light. While entering the big prestige ‘kuip’ building, some locals labeled it the tub, aiming on its big white appearance, I must admit I felt a bit excited. I have always been a lover of modern art and knowing that I will see paintings of Mondriaan, Picasso and Van Gogh up-close sounds a bit unreal. Sure, I have seen those paintings in my books from Art History class, but seeing the paintings in real life is something completely different.
One of my favorite paintings from the museum is a painting by Pablo Picasso one of the founders of Cubism. The painting above titled: “Seated woman with fish hat” is a painting Picasso made of his muse Dora Maar, a photographer and painter.
It’s one of my favorite paintings because I really like the effortless feel of the painting, the use of color and the fact that cubism paintings remind me of African art, something I like a lot and somehow feels more genuine.
Picasso was inspired by primitive African and Polynesian sculptures he has seen in Paris. As a result he displayed a lot of masks and totem figures in his paintings. By using thicker layers of paint and painting rough with a lot of expression he managed to form a completely new style; Cubism.
Besides the incredible Art I love looking at the people visiting museums. Most of them are very arty and have an outspoken appearance. Something I love to see in people. Just like the artists they express themselves and their own fashion style in their own individual way.
Overall, I recommend going to a museum by night. It gives you room to really take your time exploring all the paintings. Something everyone should experience in their life time.
